Silver cleaners can be abrasive and harsh. Make your own cleaner for sterling (not plate) silver by mixing 560 ml (1 pint) of water with a teaspoon each of salt and baking powder and adding a strip of aluminum foil. Drop the silver into this mixture, boil for a few minutes, remove with thongs and polish with a soft cloth. Add lemon juice for really grimy silver.

I have been doing this before with my silver jewelry. I learned it in our chemistry class in high school. I would put my silver jewelry in a bowl (not plastic), add some baking soda and a piece of aluminum foil (I put a bigger piece for more silver, but doing it in smaller batches is better), then pour boiling water just enough to get everything down to 1 inch deep. I let my silver stay overnight, but an hour or two should do. Once they're spotless, I polish them with a cloth to get them really shiny. You may repeat the process if you're not satisfied with the first cleaning.
This methed beats using those chemical silver cleaners that have really pungent odors. Not only are they bad for our health, but pouring them down the drain after every cleaning will definitely poison our waters with toxins.
i never knew silver jewelery cleaning can be done with ingredients found in the home (aside from toothpaste..LOL)! thanks for sharing this! is it ok if i repost this on my blog link to this website? thank you!
hi, sunmom! isn't it great?! now you can do away with those very offensive-smell ing silver cleaners and stick to this safer process. now you can even clean your silvers while your daughter is around or in the same room :)
